Real Food. Real People.
Breaking Bread is an enterprise of Appetite For Change. When you enjoy a meal with us, you are supporting our mission to build health, wealth, and social change in North Minneapolis and beyond.
Our Story
Appetite For Change (AFC) was founded in 2011 to use food as a tool to build health, wealth, and social change in North Minneapolis. Tasha Powell, Michelle Horovitz, and Princess Haley, AFC’s founders, were determined to grow an organization centered on the needs and wishes of the community.
It started simply: listening, cooking, and eating with Northsiders to see where AFC fit. With more than 30 fast food restaurants lining West Broadway, we knew it was time to create a comfortable place to gather and enjoy a fresh, made-from-scratch meal.
Since 2015, Breaking Bread Cafe has been a space for real people to come together and enjoy real (delicious) food.
The Food
Breaking Bread is a place for folks to be in community and get some fresh and flavorful food. As AFC gets ready to continue cooking in the café (after a brief hiatus extended by the pandemic), menu items will celebrate the culinary legacy of Black Americans.
We offer our own take on classic Soul Food dishes like summer succotash or spaghetti & catfish. The menu also features dishes inspired by West African, Cajun, and Low Country flavors and traditions.
Community Partnerships
Breaking Bread is cooking and distributing over 5,000 fresh meals each week to ensure that our neighbors and healthcare workers have access to nourishing food. This is possible through our partnerships with Minnesota Central Kitchen and numerous community organizations. If you or someone you know needs a meal, check our social pages for updates.
